SCM corruption and Branches

I decided to create a Branch for one of my projects in the SCM. All was good but then decided to delete that Branch. There is no Delete facility and clicking on the Branch and pressing delete manually caused major corruption. So much so I had to create a whole new SCM.

So is it such that once you create a Branch there is now way back? If that is very scary.
